died: 3 December 1894 (Samoa).
Son of Thomas Stevenson and Margaret Isabella Balfour.
His father came from a family of engineers who built many of the lighthouses around the coast of Scotland. His mother came from a family of lawyers and church ministers.
RLS was born at number 8 Howard Place in the Inverleith District.
In 1857 (aged 7 years), the family moved to number 17 Heriot Row in Edinburgh's New Town.
